     This popular gemstone is a variety of the common mineral Feldspar. It creates attractive, and somehow deeply satisfying chunky, prismatic crystals of a blue-green color. The stone is named after the Amazon River, although no deposits are known in that area. Amazonite is relatively soft and easy to work with, and it was popular in ancient Egypt. The green color of Amazonite has been traditionally linked to Fertility, Protection, and the Spirit of the Dead. It works somewhat like Rose Quartz, but it flows more with the emotions towards others then yourself.

     Also called Anhydrite, Angelite is quite a common sedimentary mineral that forms massive layer of rock. It is created when Gypsum loses water, which causes the rock layer to shrink and caverns to form. It also occurs as a result of evaporation of sea water or the weathering of Pyrite. The best Angelite comes from Peru and Mexico, but it is also found in Germany. The heart of Angelite’s healing action is the concentration of peacefulness. This crystal slows everyday thought processes and allows you to notice more subtle qualities of experience. It is sometimes – mistakenly – thought that Angelite takes its name from its angelic powdery blue color, but it is actually named after Angela, the partner of the person who discovered the stone.

     A common variety of massive Quartz, Aventurine has a long history of use for carving and healing. It was used in Tibet to increase perception and improve eyesight. It can be easily distinguished form other members of the Quartz family by its fine, sparkling inclusions. It is this quality that gives the stone its name – it was considered to resemble a sparkly green ornamental glass of the same name, invented in Italy during the 18th century, in which metallic flakes were added to the molten mixture.

     A popular crystal for its beautiful blue color, this stone has a startling blue edge, which is the key to its healing powers. Azurite forms when copper ores oxidize. It is associated with Malachite, with which it shares a similar chemical structure. In the Middle Ages, powdered Azurite was used as a blue pigment in paints and dyes. As it absorbed atmospheric moisture, it used to oxidize to Malachite, which explains why the sky is green in some early Renaissance paintings. The 2 minerals can be found in a form called Azurite-Malachite, which is excellent for “clearing out” deep-rooted emotions. The finest large Azurite crystals come from Namibia.

     Chalcopyrite is a common ore of Copper, which is most often displayed in its oxidized form, known as Peacock Ore. Un-weathered crystals are the brassy color, but once exposed to the elements, light refracts off the uneven surfaces of this soft mineral in a bewildering array of violets, purples, reds, blues, yellows, and pinks. This is especially true in its massive form. Containing both Copper, the metal of Venus, and Iron, the metal of Mars, Chalcopyrite represents the union of beauty and power.

     When polished Charoite shows swirling purple and white cloud-like structures interspersed with translucent patches and inclusions of black aegirine (a pyroxene).      Chlorite often forms green, cloudy inclusions within Quartz crystals, but its most impressive form is known as ‘Seraphina” or “Seraphinite”. This relatively recent addition to the crystal market, originating in Siberia, forms exceptionally soft radial clusters of dusty green fibers. When carefully polished it resembles crushed velvet or shot silk in its magical complexity of shades and play of light. Initially rare and extraordinarily expensive, Seraphinite is now easier to acquire – but, because of its softness, beware of it as jewelry. Many newly discovered minerals are extremely beautiful, but no match for the durability of traditional gemstones.

Chrysocolla

     Often resembling ethereal landscapes or the surface of distant planets, Chrysocolla is a stone that suggest many possibilities. It actually forms where Copper is exposed to air and water. The mineral is rarely pure, and its crystal structure varies depending on the mix of elements. It is also found mixed with other Copper minerals, such as Azurite, Malachite, Cuprite, and Turquoise.

     Deriving from the Greek “Chrysos”, (Golden) and “Prason” (leek), Chrysoprase is a type of Chalcedony that often forms in thick veins between a matrix of light, sandy stone. It has a characteristic color, a dense, translucent apple green, which makes the mineral in its un-worked state resemble some kind of confectionery – green almond paste or coconut icing, perhaps. Bohemia was traditionally the richest source, but now Australia produces some of the finest Chrysoprase.

     Formed from the skeletal remains of colonies of small sea animals and polyps, Coral is usually found in shallow, warm water. Red varieties are the most valuable and are collected of Japan, Africa, Malaysia, and in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Australia and the Caribbean yield black and golden Coral; while blue Coral is found off Cameroon in West Africa. In Tibet and China fossilized red Coral can be found at the top of mountains, along with fossilized conch shells, testifying to the long history and ever-changing surface of the planet. Although not strictly a mineral unless it has become fossilized, Coral has been a popular gemstone for thousands of years. The red variety, in particular, is cherished in India, Tibet and among Native Americans as a promoter of fertility and life-energy.
