The striking form of the mineral Pectolite is a subtle turquoise blue with soft, white veining, reminiscent of tropical seas. It is rare, being found in only one location, in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. It occurs in radiating aggregates of fine needles and as compact masses filling cracks and cavities in Basalt. A spiritual master once claimed that the island of the Caribbean were part of the lost continent of Atlantis. He said that the area would produce a blue stone with the power to heal. Some believe this referred to Larimar, and it is sometimes called the “Atlantis Stone”.

This crystal, which has only become widely available over the past decade, can be found as masses of rounded sheaves or as small, flat inter-grown plates, but most often you will see it as microcrystalline stone with a violet-pink color and a surface that glistens as it catches the light. Lepidolite is variety of Mica, colored by Lithium. In industry Mica acts as an insulator; in heating, Lepidolite insulates the heat from hurt. Look for Lepidolite intergrown with crystals of Pink Tourmaline (Rubellite) – which happens quite commonly. This gives the soft Lepidolite added strength and increases its ability to heal emotional pain and encourage the expression of desires.

Limonite

Color: Brown to Gray.

Limonite stones are formed in oceanic mud. The surface of the stone is then oxidized through exposure to wind and rain, which produces interesting patterns. Limonite is also known as bog-iron since it is found around lakesides. These strange-looking stones, with their almost organic shape, can command high prices. The most valuable examples have crystals of golden Pyrites showing through the earthy brown layer. These are sold in pairs under the name of Boji Stones.

Magnetite is a major iron ore and is best known for its magnetic properties. All Magnetite can be attracted by a magnet and sometimes Magnetite becomes a magnet itself. Naturally, magnetized Magnetite is also called Lodestone. Magnetite has been worn to grant warriors invulnerability and to increase energy, endurance, and vitality and protect from unfaithfulness. It is said to draw love, protect virtue and guard against anger, fear, and despair. Lodestones are thought to be one of the most “alive” of all the magical stones. They possess memory, intelligence, and consciousness along with wit and a soul. Malachite

A secondary mineral of Copper deposits, Malachite is often found alongside Azurite. Single crystals are rare; it more commonly forms nodules or radiating masses. Malachite contains about 60% Copper, so is a useful ore. Large deposits are in Russia, Africa, and Australia. The name derives from the Greek word for the mallow plant “Maloche”, which has leaves of the same soft, deep green. Because of its striking concentric eye patterns, Malachite has long been used as a magical protection against the “Evil Eye”.

Common in mountainous regions, veins of Milky Quartz can be seen threading their way across exposed and eroded rock surfaces. Reflecting light from great distances, this stone has been used to enhance sacred sites for thousands of years. The stones we buy and use today retain this aura of sanctity. Milky Quartz is pure white, either opaque or translucent, and owns its color to tiny bubbles of air or water contained within the Quartz. When other impurities, such as Iron, slightly color the crystal, it is known as Common Quartz. Areas of increased milkiness often occur towards the base of Clear Quartz crystals – again the result of tiny air or water bubbles. Sometimes these veils can clear when we hold the crystal, as our body heat drives out the bubbles through microscopic fractures.

This amorphous Tektite is found only in one area of the Czech Republic. Moldavite was created 15 million years ago but its origin is a mystery. It may have been formed from the impact of a meteorite melting surrounding rock – it certainly doesn’t contain the usual inclusions of volcanic rock. It may even have arrived with a comet or meteorite and so be extraterrestrial. Moldavite has always been accorded special significance. Medieval references to the Holy Grail being a stone that fell from the heavens has led some to identify Moldavite as that much sought-after relic.

This stunning Quartz mineral has soft, banded areas of red, brown, and yellow, resembling layers of colored sand. Mookaite is a sedimentary rock, which, like Flint, has been formed from the opaline, skeletal remains of tiny creatures, deposited in an ancient sea. It is found exclusively in Australia and carries the same range of colors as Aborigine Paintings, which derive from natural earth pigments. Morganite’s pink color, which is caused by the presence of Lithium, Manganese, or Caesium, makes it one of the rarer varieties of Beryl (Emerald and Aquamarine being the best known of the other colored Beryl varieties). Pearls form inside the shells of fresh – or sea – water Pearl Oysters where there is irritation from grains of sand or parasites. Just as beautiful is Mother-of-Pearl, which is the inside of the actual shell of the Pearl Oyster. Abalone and Paua are similar shells. Peridot is the gem-quality form of the mineral Olivine. Visitors to the volcanic landscapes often return with rocks encrusted with Peridot. It’s an important indicator of volcanic activity and can be found in meteorites (in the form of Olivine). Originally called “Topazus” by the Romans after an island in the Red Sea where it was found, the Greeks named Peridot :Chrysolite” (Gold stone), a label still sometimes used for the best transparent crystals. It was valued in the ancient world for its power to dispel terror and evil spirits, especially when set in Gold.

Petrified Wood

This is, in fact, not a crystal, but wood that has become fossilized over millions of years to make a powerful combination of tree and stone. When trees fall into water that has a high mineral content, the wood cells gradually fill with crystalline solution – most commonly of Opal, Agate, Jasper, or Chalcedony. Often subtle in color, with shades of brown, gray, and cream. Each piece of Petrified Wood has its own “personality”. Like other Fossils, Petrified Wood is a vivid reminder of Earth’s long history and of one form to another. Petrified Wood lends us the ability of trees to be strong yet flexible.

Pietersite

A recently discovered mineral, Pietersite is an unusual mix of the earthy and the celestial. The stone often looks like a storm in a teacup, a swirl of contrasting colors in turbulent conflict – tot and cold, fire and rain, all mixed up together with a cool, almost metallic luster. Pietersite derives from layers of sand or silt that have become cemented together by Quartz in the form of Blue Falcon’s Eye and Yellow-Gold Tiger’s Eye. Rather than having clearly defined parallel fibers, in Pietersite these components are compressed and mixed in random ways to create a uniquely energetic stone.

Prase (Actinolite Quartz)

Prase is a deep green Quartz that owes its color to fine, needle-like crystals of Actinolite – hence, it’s now commonly known as Actinolite Quartz. Prase was a valuable stone for jewelry and carving in the ancient world. In some stones the Actinolite needles can be seen as an inclusion, while in others they are so dense as to give an almost uniform green color to the Quartz.

This attractive milky-green mineral derives its name from the Dutchman, Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, who discovered it in the 18th century. Prehnite is usually seen as radiating masses of botryoidal (like a bunch of grapes) forms, or occasionally as Tabular Crystals associated with Basalts and Feldspars. Originally thought to be a variety of Emerald or Olivine and commonly found in South Africa, it is sometimes known as “Cape Emerald” or “Cape Chrysolite”. This stone, some 480 million years old, is a form of Dolerite found only in Preseli Mountain of Pembrokenshire in Wales. Dolerite is a rock composed mainly of calcium Feldspar and Augite with traces of Copper and Pyrite. 5000 years ago, the Neolithic people of Britain moved 19 giant pieces of Bluestone. Each weighing up to 4 tons, from Wales, more than 200 miles, to Salisbury Plain, to build the inner circle at Stonehenge. Legend has it that Merlin the Wizard used his magic to move the Bluestones to Stonehenge through the air. Preseli Bluestone has a powerful aura, giving focus and stability, and anchoring us in the Earth’s energy.

Hardly looking like mineral at all, the soft, silky sheen of Purpurite’s tightly arranged, fibrous crystals makes it easy to identify.
