If you’re seeking the wisdom of Bat Energy it’s a sign your higher-self is helping you sharpen your sense of ‘true seeing’. To quote the very-dearly-missed Ted Andrews (author of “Animal Speak” and many other wonderful books); “The bat is one of the most misunderstood animals.” Because Bats come out at night they have long had emblematic ties to death and the underworld. When we look closer, however, we see that Bat (like all Mammals) lives inside the Mother’s womb from which it emerges, a symbolic renewal and new beginning. So much is the case that folk wisdom calls these creatures “Night’s Guardian”. In nature, Bat is very nurturing, showing itself as socialized in its group. They have unique communication skills and stay close to family and young. While they might avoid humans, there is no lack of interaction among their own. In fact, Bats are so “touchy-feely” with their own family, it could be said that these creatures of the night are actually “cuddly”. Because of their warm, sweet nature Bat symbolism is a deeply soulful reminder that we should never judge a book by its cover. To hunt, many species of Bat require echolocation. This is a very precise ability and gives Bat the meaning of uncovering the hidden and attunement to vibrational frequencies. Adding to their ability to find prey, Bat wings are well suited to simple movements – they are, in fact, structured a bit like our fingers spreading out to discover what’s hiding in the darkness of our lives.

Those born with a Bat Totem have uncanny perceptions. Don’t try to fool them with disguises – it won’t work. In fact, it will usually blow up in your face because Bat has no time for such deception. Bats are super social animals. People who identify with Bat as their Totem Animal want to always be surrounded by family and friends with whom they can communicate honestly and openly – especially without others fearing their psychic sensitivities. If you have a Bat Totem you are an excellent communicator who knows how to change the direction of a conversation when necessary and adapt on a dime. When in a group you know how to be an active listener, giving everyone a voice. Because of this, you’ll likely have very few (if any) “emotional collisions” with others. Your perceptions make you wise and diligent, often being the initiator of new things or the one who cleans up afterward.

Bear.JPG

Bear

  • Coloring: Black, Brown, Tan, and White.

  • Deities: Artemis, Brigid, Diana, Freya, and Norse Lunar Water Goddess, Odin, Thor, and Zeus.

  • Element: Earth, Fire, and Water.

  • Origins: Arctic and North America.

  • Planet: Earth and Mars.

  • Sabbat: Litha, Lammas, Mabon, Samhain, and Yule.

  • Season: Summer to Mid-Winter.

  • Symbolize: Answers from the Dreamworld, Benevolence, Bravery, Defense, Divinity, Female Receptive Energy, Harmony, Healing, Introspection, Intuition, Invulnerability, Patience, Prophesy, Protection, Revenge, Stamina, Strength, Transformation, and Truth.

When Bear comes wandering into your life there are several things this Animal Spirit may be trying to tell you. For example, if you are a parent, images of a she-bear are enormously powerful. Your children may need your protection from a group, person, or situation. In less specific terms, Bear Spirit provides us with strength in times when we feel weak or helpless. Life can prove challenging, and Bear is definitely up to the task – no matter the source. If you have been swallowing your words and compromising your vision, Bear’s message is stay TRUE. Sometimes Bear asks us to accept an authoritative role, not only directing our own lives but guiding others. Think of the height and weight of the Bear – it demands respect. This is not the time to “play dead” but rather engage and inspire! When we look at Bear’s hibernation cycle we are also reminded of the value of rest, quiet and privacy, particularly in our busy society. It is important to move away from daily clamor so we can truly listen to our higher selves and the Divine. During the Han Dynasty Bears were worshiped in China. This symbol was so potent that Bear became a Totem Animal for the country. Panda bears are well-known in this region and people regard them as a symbol of prosperity, plenty, taking life slow and putting ourselves to more than one task successfully.

When Bear as a Spirit Animal comes to stand beside you, there’s the assurance of renewed power and courage. Whatever adversity you face, Bear holds you firm and keeps you grounded until hardships pass. Afterward Bear won’t simply disappear, but rather remains in your awareness facilitating healing in body, mind, and spirit. See, Bears are among the ultimate protectors. While many in the animal kingdom willingly give up their lives in order to protect their young, Few are as fearless as Bear. Once that kind of bravery takes root in your soul, it will forever be there. Bear may have also arrived at a time of self-examination. This could be a moment where you need “cave time” so you can really listen to your heart instead of 101 voices all of whom, while well meaning, seem to think they know what’s best for you. Find your truth. Then, live it with the same humor and honor as does Bear.

If you were born with a Bear Totem (or have chosen this mighty but humorous and playful creature as your Totem Animal) you have natural fortitude, assurance and aptitude when taking on leadership roles. Bear people growl at adversity and come to the rescue of those in their circle in times of need. You may also find a calling in medicine, be it holistic or main stream. Bear Spirit is restorative and recuperative. However, that means you must also care for the self, often by taking regular retreats to refuel. The one caution of which to remain aware is that Bear people have hot tempers. Be careful not to attack without just cause. Discernment is your ally.

Bobcat.JPG

Bobcat (Lynx)

  • Coloring: Brown, Tan, and White.

  • Deities: Aphrodite and Venus.

  • Element: Earth and Water.

  • Origins: North America

  • Planet: Earth and Venus.

  • Sabbat: Mabon, Samhain, and Yule.

  • Season: Autumn to Winter

  • Symbolize: Clairvoyance of Secrets of Others, Honesty, Non-Judgmental Counsel, Open-Hearted, Playfulness, Silence, Stealth, Suspicion and Vigilance.

As we look at the Bobcat in nature, it’s obvious that they have magnificent hunting skills. This Animal knows how to plan a means of reaching their goal quietly. They take their time – no rushing. As such, Bobcat as a Spirit Animal begins with the symbolism of patience and tenacity. A strategy is key here. Humans need this skill along with a good dose of adaptability for on-going success. Bobcats tend to hang alone or simply co-exist in their environment. When they are among other Bobcats, their actions belie wariness. This means that Bobcat recognizes that even family and friends may not always have your back. Bobcat constantly measures everything and knows when to step in or step out of a situation. Because of Bobcat’s independent nature, this Spirit is a perfect helpmate for keeping secrets. Those who walk with Bobcat can be trusted wholeheartedly. Knowing when to speak or be silent is among Bobcat’s gifts. Mind you, this comes with great responsibility. You are honoring someone’s trust. Once broken, it will be awfully hard to reclaim it. The quiet time for Bobcat Spirit is one of introspection. This is when the unseen world meets here and now. One of Bobcat’s great lessons is that we live with all manner of energies every day, but rarely stop to notice them! Each human also has many levels of self that remain unexplored. Bobcat’s message encourages both endeavors. While the Bobcat sounds imposing, like all felines, He has a love of play. When the opportunity arises, they will roll and romp with the best of them. Here Bobcat reminds us that play is especially important to our inner child’s wellbeing (let alone our stress levels). Bobcats prefer the dark. This gives the Bobcat symbolism and meanings that tie to the night. Darkness requires we know our surroundings and use our instincts. By extending our senses, we can “see” what most do not. People who work with Bobcat Spirit may also find themselves more nocturnal than normal.

If the Bobcat enters your life, you are probably entering a time of making all manner of plans that require serious coordination. Bobcat knows how to hunt down what he most wants, but recognizes that it requires a certain skill set and a good deal of fortitude. This Spirit Animal is here to help you with follow-through. Another reason for Bobcat’s appearance is when we have over-extended ourselves. The world is hectic and busy, which leaves many of us burning the candle on both ends. Bobcat counsels slowing down and giving yourself more recreational time. Laugh more, stress less. If you have been feeling over-exposed or simply uncomfortable in groups of people, Bobcat comes admonishing you to take downtime. Solitude is good for the soul. Quiet time gives you a chance to tune into yourself and the Divine.

Those born with a Bobcat Totem give whole new meaning to the phrase “strong, silent type.” There is an air of mystery about you. You listen far more than you talk, which is a great information gathering skill. Bobcat people seek out solitude and quite regularly to refill and re-energize their Spirit. This is also the time in which they prepare the best plans. Once those move forward, efforts seem to go off without a hitch. Having a Bobcat Totem means that people can rarely if ever, fool you. You can smell deception a mile away as well as hidden agendas. Bobcat’s radar is keen. Trust in it even when you are tempted to brush it off as “nothing.” Many people with a Bobcat Totem become eternal students or teachers. They love learning and discovering secrets in the pages of a good book. They also enjoy sharing those treasures with others.

Cat 2.JPG

Cat

  • Coloring: Black, Brown, Gray, Orange, Tan, and White.

  • Deity Association: Artemis, Bast, Diana, Freya, Liberty, Pasht, and Shasti.

  • Element: Fire and Water.

  • Origins: Global

  • Planet: Moon and Sun.

  • Sabbat: Litha, Lammas, and Mabon.

  • Season: Summer to Mid-Autumn.

  • Symbolize: Ability to Fight when Cornered, Agility, Aloofness, Assists in Meditation, Balance, Cunning, Detachment, Guardianship, Independence, Love, Magic, Mystery, Protection, Recuperative Power, Reincarnation, Seeing Spirits, Sensuality, Strength, and Wisdom.

Human civilization and Cats are tied together with a bow of yarn miles long. People either love Cats or hate them. Nonetheless, Cats and Dogs are the top two well-loved pets in the United States. Cats were domesticated about 4,000 years ago. The Ancient Egyptians kept Cats to control mice and rats, particularly in food storage areas. The Egyptian symbolism and meaning for Cats were influenced by their hunting ability. No one could kill a Cat, or they would face the death penalty. The true extent of the Egyptian veneration of Cats comes in the 2nd Century. Egypt and Persia are at war. The Persians were determined to take Pelusium, and they would do so with the aid of Cats. Soldiers on the towers saw the Persian troops carrying Cats into battle. Talk about a difficult situation! The Persian strategy of the day results in 7,000 losing their lives versus the over 50,000 Egyptians who perished. The Warriors simply refused to attack for fear of hitting the furry representation of Bast, the Cat-Headed Goddess. This event shows us that Cat Spirit knows the importance of safely used faith vs. twisting it for personal gain.

The Cat Spirit Animal is very selective about those they help, so take its presence as a compliment. Cat Spirit may arrive when you feel your timing is all off, and your patience is worn down to a thread. Cat helps hones your confidence and ensures the right timing so you can hunt down reliable options that position you with perfection. Teaching you when to act and when to wait is one of Cat’s greatest gifts. Cat Spirit Animal also appears when you face a task you feel you are incapable of completing. Cat says, “Don’t be a scaredy Cat!” Your Spirit Animal is resourceful and adaptable. Sometimes you have to shake things up and get out of old patterns. Change your thinking and you’ll change the outcome. When there are people or situations in your life from which you need distance, Cat Spirit enters as an aid. Your Animal Ally says “You’re too close for a decent perspective. Pause, think, and listen to your inner instincts.” Cat Spirit Animal also bears a message of balance. Life is all about opposites; work and play or action and rest. If you’re working too much, it’s time to get your paws on a feather toy and romp to your heart’s content. If you never stop moving, find that sun puddle, relax, and enjoy a much-needed Cat-nap.

Those born with Cat Totem Animal are definitely night people. Darkness comes, and they awaken with energy and curiosity. A person with a Cat Totem will take proverbial “walkabouts” with no particular destination in mind. It’s all about the walk, being wrapped in the night and working personal magic. If this is your Birth Totem, you are the ardent adventurer, including exploring your own inner space. You are naturally agile and able to land on your feet in seemingly impossible situations, and you engage life with the ferocity of a Lion in a Cat’s body. Your perspectives on life are unique because you like checking out all the angles, touching them with your sensitive whiskers. No one will ever “own” you. Independence is the name of the game. Sure, you’re up for a good scratch, snuggle and warm lap regularly, but when you want to get up and do something well, you DO. Your need for freedom means taking a periodic time out from the bustle of daily life.

Cougar.JPG

Cougar

  • Coloring: Tan and White.

  • Deity Association: None

  • Element: Earth

  • Origins: North America, and South America.

  • Planet: Earth

  • Sabbat: Imbolc and Ostara.

  • Season: Mid-Winter to Spring.

  • Symbolize: Balance, Balancing Intention, Balancing Power, Coming into Your Own Power, Courage, Cunning, Freedom from Guilt, Fury, Gaining Self-Confidence, Hunting, Intention, Leadership Power Wisely and Without Ego, Power, Remorseless, Savagery, Seeking of Freedom, Strength, and Swiftness.

When we are talking about the meaning and symbolism of Cougar, that’s a big question – so big, in fact, that Cougars are the largest felines in North America. Cougar in Her natural habitat tells us much about the energetic correlations for this Spirit Animal. Cougar is an excellent solitary hunter and very protective of their cubs. There is little hesitance in Cougar’s actions. Her Goddess-like strength, insight, decision-making skills, and leadership shines brightly. If Her cubs are in danger, cougar attacks swiftly and effectively compared to her patient, methodical tracking skills. Spiritually speaking, this translates into listening to our inner voice, keeping our eyes and ears open, and waiting for the right moment to seize the opportunity. Walking with Cougar Spirit challenges us to greater authority, particular esoterically. Cougar Medicine wants us to seek out answers and find our truths with fierce diligence. Nonetheless, this may not be a “fast” track to enlightenment. Some of the greatest mysteries remain such even beyond this life so the key is living mindfully of the moment-to-moment lessons that carry us forward. Cougar encourages us to look at our life differently. It’s a personal moment – you should feel appreciated for who you are, not what others want you to be. Cougar Animal Spirit stalks out your fears so that you can accept love, especially from yourself. There is no blame or guilt in self-actualization!

As Cougar energies begin making themselves known it signals a time of growing self-confidence. You will embrace your power and honor it. Whatever the situation it’s time to take control, to lead. Opportunities open to you. Follow Cougar Spirit’s steady, careful intention and guidance. It’s especially important to keep your mind and spirit clear so you make the best choices. Cougar walks a balanced path between assertiveness and gentleness. This balance gives you greater control over your personal energy and sense of self. In this, the Cougar’s lesson is that being proud does not necessarily mean letting ego run wild. This Spirit Animal supports your mystical self and bolsters psychic instincts. She brings bravery, adaptability, and inner fortitude on Her Path.

Cougar is a powerful and intense Totem with which to be born. The people who carry Cougar are natural leaders who inspire everyone around them. You will notice that Cougar people are also very territorial. You will always know when you’ve crossed a fine line – it is best to honor Cougar’s boundaries. If Cougar is your Totem, you can be nearly invisible when you want to. You jump on opportunities quickly and adjust to new responsibilities with unique poise and charm. Additionally, many people see you as “larger than life” particularly when speaking. This is both a blessing and challenge for Cougar but can really work to their advantage when used properly. When on the hunt for a new situation, home, relationship, etc. Cougar people are relentless until satisfied. They follow their instinct and body memories looking for the best choice. Cougar people succeed best when they trust their Totem to keep them from over-thinking the mundane. Now, this doesn’t mean Cougar people should relinquish all rationality – there is always the chance that the hunter could become the hunted in an odd turn. So, prudence is something that those with a Cougar Totem should keep in a handy back pocket.

Coyote.JPG

Coyote

  • Coloring: Brown, Gray, Tan, and White.

  • Deity Association: None

  • Element: Fire

  • Origins: Central America and North America.

  • Planet: Mars and Sun.

  • Sabbat: Litha and Lammas.

  • Season: Summer

  • Symbolize: Adaptability, Creativity, Experience, Humor, Jokester, Lessons about Yourself, Night, Opportunity, Playfulness, Shape-Shifting, Stealth, and Whimsy.

Coyote symbolism and meaning is incredibly complex. There is nothing about this animal’s teachings that are simple or superficial. The symbolism of the Coyote remains enigmatic, being both a trickster yet also a teacher. Coyote energy is a sign of trouble or good fortune. Most of all, however Coyote arrives in our lives with a smile and a song, acting as a gentle reminder that laughter is genuinely good medicine. One can be both playful and wise – there is a balance in between. The Coyote is a wild sage whose message comes indirectly. This is not a candid spirit, but one that often resorts to chicanery and jokes to get a point across. Thus, when working with Coyote you must keep on your toes. Coyote will use every opportunity to present a piece of insight through even what appears to be a wholly transparent situation. Coyote challenges us to think about those things that we have pushed down or hidden from others. Very often such matters impact our body, mind, and spirit even unwittingly. Recognizing what you’ve buried and finding coping mechanisms is a step toward wholeness. Coyote also chases away gloomy clouds and negative perspectives by offering the gift of seeing life through the eyes of good humor. If Coyote had a mantra it could well be, “expect the unexpected.” Uncertainty is part of life so you might as well embrace it like the Coyote and release what you cannot control with joy.

Coyote as a Spirit Animal appears when we either need to remove our masks or put them on for protection. Coyote also enters the lives of those who have fallen into taking life much too seriously. Learning to laugh at our mistakes and use them as a teachable moment can be incredibly healing and a wonderful coping skill. Coyote may be telling you to be mindful of the risk-reward equation. Sometimes we need to play it safe, and other times take a clever leap of faith into something wholly new and challenging. It’s likely that you are about to embark on a new situation that calls for adaptation. Finally, Coyote comes to us in times when our family needs nurturing. Turn your eyes to the home front and determine who needs extra support and what proverbial elephants in the living room you’ve been avoiding.

Those born with Coyote as a Totem Animal are wise, light-hearted folk. You have no trouble laughing at life, even your mistakes. As a child you may have been the class clown. As an adult you’ll find that odd happenstance has a way of finding you. Coyote people like to lives simply, which is why you adapt to new things so easily. Trust is especially important to you, as is your tribe of family and friends. Coyotes find that life can be both sacred and silly at the same time. You are cunning and sometimes tempted to use your trickster energy for pranks. The key here is making sure such jokes are not vengeful or ill-conceived. Coyote follows the golden rule. In love, you are devoted. Coyotes mate for life and diligently care for their young.

Deer.JPG

Deer (Stag)

  • Coloring: Brown, Tan, and White.

  • Deity Association: Artemis, Aphrodite, Apollo, Athene, Cernunnos, Cocidius, Diana, Dionysus, Elaphaia, Lu-Hsing, Shou-Hsien, and Vayu.

  • Element: Earth and Fire.

  • Origins: Africa, Asia, and North America.

  • Planet: Earth and Sun.

  • Sabbat: Imbolc, Mabon, and Yule.

  • Season: Winter, Mid-Winter, and Autumn.

  • Symbolize: Abundance, Alternative Paths to a Goal, Fertility, Gentleness, Grace, Introspection, Intuition, Love, Messages from Guides, Safety, Serenity, Sun, Swiftness, and The Warrior Aspect.

Throughout the world, Deer symbolizes tenderness tempered with strength. This allows Deer Spirit to act even when obstacles challenge the path. Deer also comes as a playmate for our inner child reminding us of innocent times where the smallest flower provided a smile and excitement. Deer medicine is strongly connected to the heart chakra. Where there is ambition, there is also love for inspiration. Deer, even when running from a predator, remains graceful. This means that Deer Spirit appearing in your life acts as a teacher of how to be gentle, determined, and sure even in difficult situations. Remember that a gentle soul is not a helpless one. Deer wisdom shows you how to use your great horns for defense. Deer may also challenge you to leave behind the safety of your grassy bedding for fresh horizons. Ever vigilant, Deer moves often for protection. As you move with her don’t take the negative patterns with you, rather let new surroundings inspire different perspectives. By so doing you create the energies of regeneration and renewal even as Deer’s antlers grow back when they fall off.

When Deer jumps in as your Spirit Animal, She acts as a reminder of the power of love and compassion. Perhaps there is a situation in your life to which you’ve become apathetic or perceive in a negative light. The challenge here is not to wallow in those unhealthy feelings. It’s time to let Deer energy help you let go and embrace kindness. Deer spirit also teaches us that peace is a powerful healer. When you put aside ego and let yourself walk a mile in another’s forest, much of your ire naturally falls off burdened shoulders. In turn, you may be able to truly re-establish a relationship or situation thought long lost. Just as Deer are ever alert in the forest, make sure to remain mindful and diligently aware of opportunities for bridging the gap(s).

Those born with Deer as a totem animal are the gentle giants of the spiritual world. They know the value of life’s lessons and appreciate the people who have helped them survive as well as thrive. Trust and kindness are never overlooked with you – you do everything possible to pay it forward! With Deer as your Totem Animal, most moves you make are purely instinctual. It might take you longer than most to make up your mind but when you do nothing, and nobody can catch you! Deer people can be very inspiring, but they do it with a nudge rather than “horning in”. Deer are also naturally observant peacemakers, showing the way for communal healing by providing different perspectives from a place of love. In nature, Deer can see well with little light, which gives Deer people the ability to see through the darkness and help guide others to safety and/or home.

Dog.JPG

Dog

  • Coloring: Black, Brown, Gray, Tan, and White.

  • Deity Association: Amenti, Artemis, Ashtoreth, Astarte, Belit-ili, Celtic Mother Goddesses Arawn, Cybelle, Diana, Gula, Hecate, Hel, Moon Goddesses, Nodens, Odhinn, and Saramam.

  • Element: Earth

  • Origins: Global

  • Planet: Earth

  • Sabbat: Samhain

  • Season: Autumn

  • Symbolize: Companionship, Compassion, Friendship, Intuition, Loyalty, Need for Approval, Tracking, Truth, Unconditional Love, and Understanding.

An excellent way of honoring the Animal Spirits that enter your life is by learning more about them. When a Dog chooses to act as a spiritual guide or an aid, you can trust in it for protection, alertness, bravery, devotion, and constancy. This symbolic value for Dog isn’t surprising. This creature has barked at the heels of humankind for so long that no one knows for sure when they were first domesticated. Many people believe that Dogs have souls and will reunite with their human counterparts in the afterlife. In other words, all Dogs do indeed go to heaven! The ancient Egyptians used Dog symbolism regularly. The city of Cynopolis translates as “Dog”. In this region, it was actually a law that the people of the city care for all Dogs diligently. They also worshipped the Dog Star (Sirius) because its position in the sky predicted the flooding of the Nile. This marked the New Year. This predictability of the Dog spirit equated to faithfulness and also gives Dog an additional metaphysical relationship with prognostication. It seems everywhere you looked in the ancient world, and indeed modern times, Dog spirit is there with more bark than bite. Leaders in Babylon and Assyria both have numerous Dogs mentioned in their chronicles, along with the concept that Dogs have psychic vision and see ghosts or imperceptible dangers. They use this mystical ability to protect their owners not only in this life but the next.

When the Dog Spirit Animal chooses you, you will have a best friend in the etheric plane probably for the remainder of your years on this planet. Dog cannot be deterred easily and is particularly drawn to humans who show service and loyalty generously to others. This animal spirit guide also comes when a soul calls out for aid, akin to the St. Bernard arriving just in the nick of time. If Dog spirit keeps nudging you, be aware. There may be problems afoot that you cannot immediately see. Let your Dog’s nose sniff out the problem. Additionally, Dog spirit always reminds you to maintain your integrity and faithfulness with all the gentle souls that share your life, both human and animal. This bit of animal medicine is true for self too – you cannot be a good friend to others without having the same relationship with yourself. As a spiritual companion Dog builds an intense sense of devotion with all your relations. Should your proverbial tribe come into times of trouble, Dog spirit will stand firm by your side.

If you find yourself attracted to a Dog totem it says a lot about your ability to give and receive love. It also reflects a person who serves quietly in the backdrop, leaving others in the spotlight while you support success. From this position, you can see everything that’s going on more clearly and stand watch for any trouble. A Dog totem symbolizes the ability to devote oneself to a spiritual path or personal ethic no matter the situation. It is not surprising to find many ministers and metaphysical teachers having a Dog totem. There is no need for a leash here, the dedication is already apparent, and it would take a major crisis for you to abandon your faith. Dog as a Totem Animal also embodies the social self. People with this Animal Spirit Guide ally never stray far from their inner circle of friends and family. When life becomes harsh, a Dog totem comes close and nuzzles us with unconditional love. He will lie at your feet and keep watch until the storms pass.

Fox.JPG

Fox

  • Coloring: Black, Gray, Orange, Red, and White.

  • Deity Association: Bacchus, Demeter, Dionysus, Enki, and Inari.

  • Element: Fire and Earth.

  • Origins: Global

  • Planet: Earth, Mercury, and Moon.

  • Sabbat: Imbolc, Ostara, and Yule.

  • Season: Spring and Winter.

  • Symbolize: Adaptability, Camouflage, Cunning, Family, Invisibility, Observation, Oneness, Shape-Shifting, Slyness, Travel, and Wisdom.

Nearly every culture regards Fox symbolism as including stealthy movement that’s nearly silent because this creature is so closely acclimated to the space around them . Some cultures, including those of China and Peru, felt that the Fox spirit had god-like powers and She could shapeshift into human form. In Native American tradition Fox is the fire-bringer who possesses healing abilities and has strong ties with Shamanic practices. As a guide and messenger, Fox may come to you when you’ve started a project that’s ill conceived. Highly intelligent and a bit of a trickster, Fox knows all too well when there’s malicious trouble afoot. Thankfully, Fox brings clever solutions to your situation, ones that require determination and persistence along with some serious forethought. Fox wants you to get past illusions, adapt to your discovery and see things clearly before moving forward any further. The Fox spirit is a diversified creature that folktales show as being able to slip into many different roles as the circumstances dictate. Problem solving aptitude and keen mental faculties sum up Fox’s meaning and symbolism nicely.

Fox as a Spirit Animal comes to you during times of change, particularly challenging or unpredictable ones. Many people are slow to move out of their comfort zones even when situations call for responsiveness and flexibility. Fox energy says, “You must act, but do so wisely.” In working with Fox as an animal spirit guide you may find your supernatural senses keener than usual, particularly at twilight and dawn. These are “in between times” that hang on the edge of other realms and awareness Some say Fox may will guide you in working with fairies and devas. Take special note of the Fox’s color. Is your new spirit guide a:

  • White Arctic Fox: White is the color of purity and divinity. Maybe Fox has appeared to let you know it’s time for all your thoughts, words, and deeds come from a place of only positive energy.

  • Red Fox: The color red (like orange) is a solar symbol. When a Red Fox shows up it’s time to tackle life with passion!

  • Fennec Fox: Besides being so darn adorable, Fennec Foxes have ears that go on for days! This is an omen that it’s time to listen with your Third Eye – not your actual human hears.

  • Gray or Grey Fox: The color grey is an “unemotional color”. It is elegant and reserved. When a Grey Fox appears, it’s time to take a conservative approach.

If you were born with a Fox Totem Animal you have an uncanny knack for awareness. Little gets by you, especially any form of trickery. As you respond to your environment and current circumstances you action is swift and smooth. You have little trouble adapting to new situations or overcoming obstacles on a moment-by-moment basis. Fox people have a natural sense of humor that they may find hard to keep in check. It’s tempting to pull that prank, but not if the result is one that harms an innocent. Discretion is a hard lesson for those guided by the Fox, but it is a necessary skill. Those whose soul chose Fox medicine in this turn around the Medicine Wheel always seem to know which way to go. They are agile thinkers and doers. Because of this, their critical thinking skills are lightening quick and usually on the money!

Hare

Hare (Rabbit)

  • Coloring: Brown, Black, Gray, Tan, and White.

  • Deity Association: Andraste, Aphrodite, Chandra, Eostra, Eros, Freya, Hermes, and Holda.

  • Element: Fire and Water.

  • Origins: Africa, Eurasia, and North America.

  • Planet: Moon

  • Sabbat: Ostara, Litha, and Lammas.

  • Season: Spring and Summer.

  • Symbolize: Disaster, Fear of Tragedy, Fertility, Illness, Long Life, Mystery, Quick-Thinking, and Strengthening Intuition.

The Hare archetype is anything BUT a “fuzzy bunny” lightweight in the world of animal symbolism. In many myths and legends Hares act as guides between heaven, earth, and the underworld. As such they’re a potent emblem of Shamanic journeys and may even be called upon to monitor those rituals. In the Earth Plane Hare is a sound navigator, having perceptions that pilot him through the darkness. Because of this, Hare represents Sensitives and Seers and their psychic powers. It also symbolizes those moments in life when we must “hop to” even in unfamiliar surroundings, using our inner light for direction. Hares are creatures of the Earth, living close to the ground where they can easily hide if need be. The meaning here can be twofold – either you need camouflage or that you have become under-recognized among peers. If we take a cue from Bugs Bunny and Br’er Rabbit we also see this animal spirit as a trickster, but not in a bad way. Tricksters know their enemy and remain keenly aware of an antagonist’s movements so as to outwit them. When chased, Hares don’t move in a predictable manner – rather they zip and zag, which aids in escape. If that doesn’t work, then Hare simply shapeshifts for a tidy retreat. With this in mind, Hare has the additional symbolism of directional awareness, cleverness, planning and keen senses.

When Hare leaps into your life it’s time to stop, look, and listen like you’ve never listened before. Sadly, Hares are one of  the most common prey animals. Perhaps this is why Mother Nature gifts Hares with epic fertility. That said, Hares often appear to those who are being “hunted”. Is there danger afoot at your job, in your home, or within? If so, now is the time to nurture your instincts – especially those that aid in survival. Is it time to zig? Is it time to zag? Or, is it time to stay perfectly still – thus allowing your predator’s eyes to be drawn to other movement. This gives you time to get to safety while they are looking the other way. When Hare appears, it may be letting you know that personal transformation is needed at this time. While Hare has survived for centuries, at the end of the day they are some of the biggest “victims” of the animal kingdom. Have you adopted the role of “victim”? Do you feel that others always try or do take advantage of you? If so, it’s time to stop. You can only be a victim if you allow it. Hares are some of the most quick witted critters on the planet. Trust your smarts. You are good enough!

People with Hare totems live life spontaneously, and are the life of a party. Hares love good fun and frolic, so if you’re a proverbial wall flower a little Hare energy would do you good. Hare as a totem also affords quick wittedness and creative problem solving. Hare energy challenges your reflexes and hones dexterity spiritually and physically. You’ll begin to know what Paths support your soul’s journey vs. those that undermine it. Carrying a Hare totem carving is an Earth-friendly alternative to a Hares foot for luck and a little whimsical serendipity. You may have to take a leap, hop, or skip of faith to see it manifest, but Hare will not ask you to do so without cause. Don’t let fear block opportunity.

As you read through the in-depth collection of Horse information here, take some time to meditate on it. Consider what kind of spiritual gifts Horse has appeared to bestow on you and how you are meant to work with its energies. When Horse comes into play there is more than enough motivation to carry you through anything. Horse symbolism, however, changes depending on whether the Horse is wild or tethered. Once tamed, the Horse represents those parts of our personality that we restrict and confine, particularly sexual urges. The tamed Horse also symbolizes service and trusting relationships. In wild form the Horse bears vitality and freedom on its hooves, not just physically but mentally and spiritually. There is no constraining the Horse when it runs with the wind, but Horse also enjoys the company of family and friends. It’s always more fun to gallop together in a setting where individuality never gets lost. That’s why the Horse symbolism speaks to our social nature and ability to move in and out of various circles equally well. Jung felt that the Horse symbolizes personal power – things that we master in our lives, and our natural gifts. Horse is a creature of success and self-actualization. When you know what drives you and put that awareness to work, you can get much further and faster than you ever thought.

As your spirit animal, Horse is showing itself to you as an omen that the call for freedom is galloping into your world. Horse’s repeated appearance is a harbinger for you to allow Horse energy to gift you with the power and endurance needed at this time. The spirit of this trusty steed can carry you down the right path to breaking free of whatever bonds are holding you back. Horse is an immensely helpful spirit animal that helps facilitate spiritual awakening and growth by teaching you how to create symmetry between your desire for independence and your current responsibilities. There is a time to rest and a time to run and a lot of living in between. Enjoy the sweet apple that drops from the tree before taking on that next challenge. Horse Spirit loves to work with the winds. As an animal spirit guide, Horse is an excellent teacher about personal energy and working with air elementals. No matter where she takes you, you will always have a sense of balance – of how to ride and not fall or fail in your duty.

Those who identify with Horse as their Totem Animal enjoy a freedom of expression that is nothing short of miraculous. Horses are animals of adventure, power, friendship, and family. With Horse as a Totem Animal, jumping life’s hurdles comes easy to those who walk in this powerful animal’s energy. But being able to jump hurdles is only one small part of Horse Totem magic. Horse’s possess laser sharp focus that aids them in determining exactly how and when to jump those obstacles. Horse rarely stay stuck in a rut. Horse totems are all about going in a new direction! Is it time to move on? Should you get a new home or travel to places unknown? Carry a Horse Totem when you seek answers to those kinds of questions.

The Mouse is quick on its feet and has sharp senses, and it can adapt to its environment to survive. Just like the monkey symbolism, what the mouse symbolism wants to teach you is to make the most of what you have, no matter how scare the resources and how tough the environment. Because when you do, you will survive and thrive while others around you will struggle. The Mouse symbolism urges you to tune out what the naysayers are saying and just listen to what your inner voices are telling you. Do not be satisfied with what you know, so always be curious and always be learning. Be willing to get your hands dirty to get to the bottom of things. Keep your perspectives fresh, and don’t be afraid to know the answers to your life’s questions! Look at how you communicate with people. Remember that communication is the key to a happy and lasting relationship, so share your thoughts and feelings instead of being silent. The Mouse symbolism also teaches you to make the most of what you have. Be grateful for all the blessings that you are receiving. You have survival instincts, so this difficult period that you are going through is something that you can easily overcome. Take the lessons with you and use them to help you better navigate life!

The Mouse spirit animal signifies a time when you need to take a closer look at your life and scrutinize the details that you may have missed. If the Mouse symbolism is being presented to you, it means that there are people or areas in your life which you have overlooked and taken for granted, and that this is the time to make right your wrongs. The meaning of the Mouse urges you to be conscious of the consequences of your actions. Examine everything, and think about how this seemingly small thing can affect your life and the people around you! The mouse spirit animal prides itself in its ability to protect itself from predators. It does this by using its skills of stealth and its mastery of staying hidden. Some people take this mouse symbolism as running away from problems or hiding from the challenges of life. For them, this mouse meaning signifies always being a prey or victim to bad people or unfair circumstances. But you should know that it is quite the opposite. It does not mean bad luck at all, because the Mouse meaning only brings forth the message that no matter how small you may be in this world, you can survive and thrive! You can achieve big dreams and accomplish amazing tasks if you just believe in yourself.

Your Mouse totem wants you to orient yourself to see the big and the obvious while also learning to appreciate the small and the underrated. When you have the Mouse totem, you can create a secure environment for your loved ones, even with limited resources. You can make a home feel like a real home even without creature comforts because you make sure that you fill it with warmth, love, peace, and happiness. You pride yourself in being sensitive to the needs of others and doing what you can to make them happy and loved. Whatever environment you are in, you can make people feel loved and protected! Just like the mouse spirit animal, you are guided by your instincts, allowing you to steer clear of harm’s way. You are very observant and perceptive, and you know the right timing to do or say something. You can survive even the toughest challenges because you have a survivor’s instinct. You rely on your instincts because they are seldom wrong, and you have an uncanny ability to know which path leads to good or bad.

The idea of Snake Spirit slithering into your life may not, at first, seem appealing. Many people have an aversion or fear of Snakes. Nonetheless, the ancients around the world thought of Snake as a symbol of life, change and longevity. It is not unusual for folks to seek out Snake symbolism and meaning when you need to heal or transform your life in some manner that improves the overall quality of living. Think of Greek tales of Asclepius, the God of medicine. His power tool is a staff with two Snakes entwined (the Caduceus). If you’re working on becoming a Light Healer (for people, animals, or the earth) this is an excellent symbol to embrace for honoring Snake. Because the Snake moves along the ground, many connect this creature to the Earth’s most primal energy and the force of creation itself. Additionally, the Earth element aspect of Snake reminds us to keep one foot on the ground even when exploring Spiritual pursuits. There are underlying themes in Snake Symbolism and Meaning and one is definitely personal growth. Snakes shed their skin as they grow, so ask yourself – what do you need to shake off so you can expand your horizons.

When Snake starts appearing as a Spirit Animal and Guide it is time to cast away illusions, unhealthy beliefs and unreasonable expectations be they emotional, physical, or Spiritual. The only way to wholeness is by walking in truth and living each moment to its fullness. Give up the “would haves”, “could haves” and “should haves” and focus on NOW. Several cultures including Celtic, Indian and Ancient Greeks felt the Snake embodied sexuality. It’s not surprising then that Snake Spirit may come to help you when you struggle with your passions and pleasures, and experiencing them wisely, without guilt. The Snake opens Chakras, particularly the Base Chakra so you can understand and embrace sacred sensuality in body and Spirit. This path to energetic opening is referred to as a “Kundalini Awakening”. One of the most potent lessons from Snake Spirit is that of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Note this may not be literal (situations, relationships etc. have these elements). No matter the circumstance, let Snake guide you through this mystery. Keep a journal of your journey toward transformation. Always remember, though, Snake sheds their entire skin, they re-emerge whole.

People born with a Snake Totem are constantly changing themselves or circumstances around them. In between those efforts they’re typically content to bask in the sunshine of life! The only time they strike out is when startled or feel they (or someone they know) is in danger. With Snake as your Totem Animal, it’s vital you stay close to the earth. You may find yourself gardening, rock hunting or walking through the green forest with all your senses open. This is the perfect time to connect with your Higher Self, Devas, Angels and the Divine. These are all fantastic locations for healing meditations and honing your natural skills.

Turtle

  • Coloring: Brown, Green, and Yellow.

  • Deity Association: Aphrodite, Ea, Mother Goddesses, and Venus.

  • Element: Earth, Water and Air.

  • Origins: Global

  • Planet: Earth, Uranus, and Venus.

  • Sabbat: Imbolc, Ostara, and Litha.

  • Season: Spring and Summer.

  • Symbolize: Creativity, Healing, Knowledge, Love, Protection, and Regeneration.

Turtle Spirit moves to an inner drummer that is in no hurry. Seeming to have no worries, Turtle plods along at a pace all Her own. If turtle had a mantra it would be “one small step at a time”. This Spirit Animal truly lives in the moment – taking one after another with simple, innocent acceptance. This is a powerful lesson for humans who rush about at unhealthy speeds, often missing the mystical gem that is right in front of them, here and now. Turtle’s greatest gift to us is learning to slow down and smell the roses (literally and figuratively). Being a water creature, some of the Turtle’s symbolism and meaning comes from that elemental influence. It is from the water that Turtle gains the attributes of insight and being able to understand and express our deeper emotions. In numerous myths and religions Turtle takes a distinctly noticeable spot as representing resoluteness and peace. Cosmological traditions speak of a World Turtle that either supports the heavens or transports the Earth safely on Her back. Additionally, Turtle carries its ‘home’ on its back. They are one as the Turtle cannot leave its shell. In this, Turtle symbolizes that our earthly body is our home – for now. It can protect and shelter you, so take good care of it. Some of the Deities associated with Turtle Spirit include Ea, the Mesopotamian God of wisdom and magic who lives under the ocean, Venus, and Aphrodite – goddesses of love and fertility (Greco-Roman), Vishnu who has a giant turtle avatar and Set the Egyptian God of the underworld. Overall Turtle medicine reminds us that strength and determination are the keys to overcoming our obstacles. Take your time before you move – don’t go jumping out of your shell right into danger.

When Turtle comes to you as a Spirit Animal it bears the message of staying true to your path and being at peace with your choices. This may also be a sign that you are carrying too much weight on your shoulders. You cannot fix anything if you’re overwhelmed. Put down negative things that hold your back, go into your shell, and meditate. Get grounded, embrace your emotional power, and reclaim your serenity. Also, Turtle might appear as your Spirit Animal during times when it seems as though your world is topsy turvy. Many mistakenly believe Turtles cannot right themselves when they’re flipped over on their back. But this is not always true. Turtles have strong necks and can flip themselves over. In this, Turtle can come to you as a reminder to use your own head. You are powerful enough to right yourself, even when others don’t believe you can.

Those born with Turtle as a totem animal typically live a long life. You pace yourself, savoring the moment to moment blessings. Having a safe haven is especially important for Turtle people, so choose your shell wisely. Know when to retreat for your own safety or peace of mind. As one of the first animals on the Earth, Turtle Totem has the ability to express abundant wisdom and dig deep into the Greater Mysteries. The calmer speed of Turtle’s life doesn’t mean it’s boring. If anything, Turtle is dynamic, particularly when connecting with water. This fills you and recharges those batteries that even the most metered Turtle can burn out.

Wolf.JPG

Wolf

  • Coloring: Black, Brown, Gray, Red, and White.

  • Deity Association: Apollo, Ares, Cernunnos, Lycaeus, Mars, Odhinn, Silvanus, and Zeus.

  • Element: Earth

  • Origins: Global

  • Planes: Earth and Moon.

  • Sabbat: Yule

  • Season: Winter

  • Symbolize: Co-Operation, Cunning, Dreams, Family, Freedom, Hunting, Individuality, Insight, Introspection, Leadership, Listening, Loyalty, Magic, Psychic Energy Connected to the Moon (Hidden Wisdom), Psychic Energy Connected to the Moon (Hidden Wisdom), Seeking, Sharing Knowledge and Wisdom, Stealth, Strength, and Teaching.

If ever there was a complex animal spirit guide, Wolf is it. Their lore and legend is filled with tales of terror. Elusive, almost ghostly, predators that hunt in bloodthirsty packs – this is the savage reputation of Wolves. But Wolves are the consummate comics of the wilderness. Their commitment to and love of family is humbling, their communication skills elegant, and their extreme intelligence awe inspiring. And these traits are only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Wolf symbolism and meaning is rich and multidimensional. When wolf appears in your life it may be time to take a close look at a person or situation who may be a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”. Trust is earned, do not give it freely. Pay close attention to what your instincts tell you. While this Wolf symbolism seems negative, consider that He is an omen of something you’re not seeing. Wolves have been observed to have a highly developed “third eye” or “sixth sense”. Because you’re seeking out Wolf symbolism and meaning, perhaps it’s time to work on cracking open your intuitive senses. Wolf is also very smart, loves autonomy and has a strong social character.

As a Spirit Animal, Wolf comes to support and teach us about matters of personal power, balance, self-control, and our animal instincts. Wolves are misunderstood by many to be aggressive, vicious animals who attack with no provocation. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Wolves go out of their way to avoid fights. However, when they want to be heard, when they want to stave off or deter an attacker, they will stand their ground. Wolves are incredible examples of standing in the seat of your own power. They let it be known that they can fight to the death and are prepared to do so but they rarely initiate combat. Humans are animals and sometimes we overlook the gifts from nature that are already within us. Life has an order and rhythm. When you run with a pack there is a sense of community, and when you’re alone – liberation. If you are not sure where your circle lies, Wolf’s howl helps you find others of a like mind. He also gives you the ability to mark your territory clearly should anyone threaten that sacred space. Don’t be afraid to make your position known.

If you were born with a Wolf Totem, you have an innate connection with Nature and a craving for freedom. Your life is filled with the intense instincts of Wolf Spirit who constantly keeps you vigilant in the face of potential danger. Those born with Wolf medicine in their soul simply understand how to help balance the world and aid in the creation of a more fertile and abundant ecosystem for all. Those who walk with Wolf sometimes don’t trust themselves as much as they should. When you find yourself falling into that emotional pattern rely on your keen mind and logic to renew balance. The key caution for Wolf people is your predatory nature. Now, here’s the thing about a Wolf’s “predatory” nature – they mostly focus on taking down the weak, sick, and elderly. Rarely will a Wolf prey on a strong, mature adult. Surely Nature has a reason for this but in terms of symbolism for humans, the lesson here is to make sure that you do not choose to prey on those who are not able to stand against you. Instead, focus on finding positive ways to put that predatory energy to work in your life!
